How to Measure ROI from a Marketing Conference

GrowthWrld Editorial·

Every conference season, someone at the executive table asks: 'was it worth it?' The honest answer for most attendees is 'we don't know', because the ROI framework was never set up. Here is one that works — for GrowthWrld and for any serious professional event.

The wrong metric: sessions attended

You will forget 90% of the content within a month. Session attendance is a vanity metric. The value of a curated conference is in the conversations, not the slides.

The three metrics that matter

  • Named conversations: the number of substantive 20+ minute conversations with people you didn't know before.
  • Follow-ups initiated: the number of concrete next actions (call, intro, trial) agreed during the event.
  • Follow-ups converted: the number of those next actions that produced a measurable outcome within 90 days.

Before the event: set an objective per attendee

One objective per attendee, written down, shared with the team. 'Meet 5 CMOs of DTC brands doing €5-20M ARR.' 'Find 2 potential agency partners for our MENA rollout.' 'Recruit 1 senior growth hire.' Without a written objective, the event becomes tourism.

During the event: the notebook rule

After every substantive conversation, write down three things: the person's name, the concrete next step, and one thing you learned. Do it within 10 minutes. This single habit multiplies conference ROI more than any other tactic we've measured.

After the event: the 72-hour rule

Every follow-up gets sent within 72 hours of the event's end. Personal, specific, referencing something from the conversation. Follow-ups sent after week 2 convert at less than 20% of the 72-hour rate — this is the single largest source of wasted conference budget.

The 90-day review

90 days after the event, review the three metrics with everyone who attended. If your follow-up conversion rate is under 25%, the problem isn't the event — it's the follow-up system. Fix that before booking the next one.

What a €3,000 conference actually costs

Ticket + travel + accommodation + 4 days of opportunity cost easily hits €8,000-€12,000 per attendee. If your objective is one senior hire, one enterprise deal, or one strategic partnership, ROI is straightforward. If your objective is 'general learning', ROI is almost always negative — send someone to a course instead.
